Credentials
Mr. Mercer graduated from the University of La Verne College of Law with honors, as the 2004 Class Salutorian. While attending La Verne, he earned CALI awards in Business Organizations, Evidence Law, Contract Law, and Tort Law. He passed the California Bar Exam 07/2004.
Mr. Mercer is employed as a probate examiner by the Orange County Superior Court in a job share arrangement that allows him to maintain a probate law practice in Riverside County.
Background
Mr. Mercer began his career as a research chemist for Unocal Corporation, where he co-authored a patent on synthetic drilling fluids, and won a “Take the Lead Award” for producing a racing oil video used in marketing presentations. From there he moved to Break-Free, Inc. as head of research and quality control for military weapons maintenance fluids and equipment.
When Break-Free Inc. was purchased and moved to Florida, Mr. Mercer remained in California and taught chemistry at local community colleges while attending law school. Most recently, Mr. Mercer taught at Mt. San Jacinto Community College, Menifee Campus.
After passing the bar in 2004, he founded the Law Office of James Mercer in Lake Elsinore, where he specialized in Probate Law, including wills, trusts, estates, and litigation. He began work as a probate examiner for the Orange County Superior Court in January 2008, and currently works part time for the court while maintaining his practice in Riverside County.
